Chellie Carroll began her career as a designer working on launch campaigns for Playstation and BBC3 before turning her considerable talents to illustration almost 20 years ago. A keen climber with a love of the outdoors, she has since gone on to illustrate an eclectic mix of books for children and young adults – many of which, such as Lily Dyu’s Fantastic Female Adventurers, focus on adventure, nature and landscape. Chellie talks about her “charlatan” working life, how she uses her distinctive style of illustration as a storytelling tool and the challenges of translating other people’s words into pictures.
