Wild Horizons: Shorts Programme

Sunday Selection A mix of short films – from fast and wild to more contemplative – that celebrate outdoor adventure and exploration in all its forms. Our Sunday programme will feature the following short films: Thrawn: A Stubbornly Scottish Snow Film In the Scottish Highlands, the word “thrawn” means “stubborn,” but in a good way. It’s a virtuous struggle to make the most of what’s available. Professional snowboarder Lesley McKenna was raised on thrawn, and she has spent her life pushing the boundaries of her sport while advocating for the people and the place that shaped her. Flip the switch If you don’t have role models to look up to, it’s harder to progress as a rider. Georgia Astle grew up chasing her older brother. “If he could do it, I could do it” she figured. But that could only take her so far. The Bird in My Backyard The Bird in my Backyard follows a window salesman turned hummingbird expert as he documents the secret lives of the hummingbirds that nest in his urban backyard. Rubbish Shoes Destined for landfill, end-of-life running shoes are saved and reborn thanks to Ultrarunner Dan Lawson. Finding Bo Finding Bo tells the story of how Scottish photographer Karen Miller fell in love with one mountain hare, Bo, and her journeys up into the snowy Monadhliath Mountains each winter to find her. Ascension Series – Episode 3 – Hamish Frost One of Europe’s leading adventure photographers, Hamish Frost lives twin lives. In the third episode of the Ascension Series, we explore the side of himself he has kept hidden from the outdoor community. A story of confidence and connection and a reminder of the importance of diversity in the great outdoors. Spellbound Wingsuit BASE jumping is often presented as a thrill-seeking adrenaline rush. Spellbound takes us deeper into the more contemplative aspects of jumping, as David Walden and friends venture into the mountains around his home in New Zealand. Beautiful scenery and hypnotic cinematography eject us from our daily lives into a world of air, earth and flight. Directed by Richard Sidey. Written and Narrated by David Walden Each session is different. Runtime 1hour 15min Auditorium, Eastgate Theatre Tickets are Pay-What-You-Decide £14 or £10 or £6
