Wild Horizons: Shorts Programme

Saturday Selection A mix of short films – from fast and wild to more contemplative – that celebrate outdoor adventure and exploration in all its forms. Our Saturday programme will feature the following short films: White horses Follow Emily Grimes on a transformative journey along Scotland’s north coast with two horses and a surfboard. Freya Leo Houlding’s daughter, Freya, uses climbing as a practice to lean into discomfort and fear to help navigate her neurodiversity and harness its strengths. The Last Observers A Swedish couple’s 36-year commitment to watching the skies. Since 1987, they did not miss one of their now over 100,000 observations—through the births of their four children, snowstorms or illness. All this time they’ve also remained committed to what originally led them to the station by the lighthouse in Falsterbo, Sweden—their mutual love for birds. Down by the River Project by artist Rhiana Laws in collaboration with Dance for Parkinson’s Scottish Borders Thought to be the first example of a creative outdoor Dance for Parkinson’s project, ‘Down by the River I…’ focuses on a series of movement workshops supported by Connecting Threads between August and November 2023, and subsequently made into a unique short film with BAFTA-winning film-maker Felipe Bustos Sierra / Debasers Films (Nae Pasaran, 2018). At the heart of the project was Rhiana Laws’ desire to develop creative movement practices in and around the River Tweed in collaboration with communities in Peebles, to promote mental and physical wellbeing in connection to the river and each other. Dance for Parkinson’s is a global network founded upon a wealth of evidence-based research. Down by the River I… has been created to celebrate the benefits of nature, creativity and human connection with the global Parkinson’s community. It’s All Downhill From Here ‘It’s All Downhill From Here’ captures runners, Trina and Gloria, in the mountains together before the race as they taper off, simply enjoying the alpine trails and their time running together. The title of the film, ‘It’s All Downhill From Here’, lends itself to the subtext: the two runners are creating space for older women, and Black women, in the outdoor running sphere, where age is often perceived as a barrier to competitiveness, and even enjoyment. We intend to capture the essence of their friendship, and their cause, in a short, joyful piece which shows more than tells. Each session is different.
