Rotary Young Musician of the Year  – Peebles Area Competition Goes Online. Available from Sat 21 November – Mon 21 December

From Saturday 21 November online audiences will be able to enjoy performances by the finest young musicians from in and around Peebles competing to qualify to become Rotary Young Musician of the Year.  Usually a live annual event at Nomad Beat Community Music School, COVID restrictions mean that the 2020/21 competition has been moved to the Eastgate Theatre stage where it has been filmed and then posted online with a £5 “ticket” price, making it available to everyone with access to the internet.

The competition is in two categories – solo instrumental and solo vocal.  This year most of the competitors are playing instruments including violin, cello, guitar and piano. Each young musician plays two pieces in contrasting styles in a performance of under 10 minutes.

Ruth Kikby of Nomad Beat said “The power of music to enrich lives has never been more obvious than in this current situation.  We are delighted to be able to continue the tradition of celebrating the achievements of young musicians locally and though we will all miss the experience of playing for a live audience, we are excited to be able to make the performances available to so many more people.  Last year the Peebles Area Competition produced the youngest ever competitor to reach the South of Scotland Final, maybe this year we can go even further.”

Buy a £5 ticket and be amazed by the quality of music to look forward to in the very near future.   Ticket buyers will be sent a code to access the film from on Saturday 21 November for a month.

NB: The judges, who look like they are sitting very close to each other, are actually separated by a perspex screen!
