Dr Martin A Hendry MBE, Professor of Gravitational Astrophysics and Cosmology and head of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow returns to the Eastgate at the start of National Space Week to explain, in simple terms, the birth of gravitational astronomy, an entirely new branch of science.
Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves over 100 years ago. Last year, scientists announced that the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) had recorded a tiny disturbance in spacetime. Einstein was correct.
Plans are already in hand to use the waves to gaze across the Universe at whatever lies beyond anything we have seen before.
