Dr Martin Goldber, Principal Curator of Medieval Archaeology and History, National Museums of Scotland describes the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland. Buried at the beginning of the 10th century, the collection lay undisturbed for a thousand years before being unearthed by a metal detectorist in Galloway in September 2014. It includes silver jewellery and ingots and contains an unparalleled range of precious metal and jewelled items, a unique gold bird-shaped pin and the only complete lidded vessel ever discovered in Britain and Ireland.

This Halkett Hendrie Memorial Lecture is presented jointly with Peebles Archaeology Society
