Short films exploring adventures in cold places followed by an evening with Calum Maclean – a man with a passion for cold water, physical pain and wild Scottish landscapes.

Tonight’s short films (see running order below) explore adventures in cold places followed, after the interval, by an evening with wild swimmer Calum Maclean. The hugely entertaining star of the BBC’s online channel The Social and BBC Alba, Calum is a film-maker, TV presenter and Ambassador for the Outdoor Swimming Society with a particular penchant for cold water, physical pain and wild Scottish landscapes … preferably all at the same time. Join him as he reveals (almost) all about the joys of taking the plunge in remote – and usually Baltic – lochs and rivers.

Short films:

Skier versus drone, 3.57’, Dir Mike Douglas, Canada

Filmed in Utah, Olympic Bronze Medallist skier racer Victor Muffat-Jeandet faces off against a two times World Drone Racing Champion in a dual GS race to see who is the fastest down the mountain …

Every few winters, 10.05’, Dir Matt Pycroft, Ryan Goff, UK

A look at the quirky, unique community of Scottish skiers who epitomise dedication to their sport and an unrivalled tenacity. The entry requirements? Patience and resilience in abundance.

Surfer Dan, 7.32’, Dir Tim Kemple, US

For Dan, all he needs to surf are the icy waves of Lake Superior, Michigan in the dead of winter. It’s not for everyone.

The Ant and the Whale, 7.50’, Dir Dom Bush, UK

In this understated study of obsession, climber Ian Almond reflects on the sacrifices and achievements of a life spent in the mountains – and what happens when that privilege is taken away.

The Swimmer, 11.27’, Dir Thomas Beug, Ireland

Stephen Redmond from West Cork was the first person ever to complete the world famous ‘Ocean’s Seven’ challenge. This film looks at the beauty and the poetry of Stephen’s passion and the peculiar, solitary psyche of an open-water swimmer.

Wild ice: Backcountry skating Alaska, Dir Paxson Woelber, US

Filmed in Alaska over the course of two winters, watch as nordic bladers, hockey players, figure skaters, and a few adventurous puppies enjoy some true backcountry skating.

Session kindly sponsored by Peebles Hydro & The Park, Peebles.
