The second concert of Midsummer Music from Music in Peebles features Marcus Barcham Stevens (Violin) and Christina Lawrie (Piano).
Music In Peebles presents Marcus Barcham Stevens (Violin) & Christina Lawrie (Piano)
For the second Midsummer Music concert, Music in Peebles welcomes two of the best-known figures from the Scottish chamber music scene. Marcus Barcham Stevens is Principal Second Violin in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and will be familiar to Peebles audiences as a member of the legendary Fitzwilliam String Quartet. Christina Lawrie is one of Scotland’s finest pianists and has previously given memorable solo recitals here.
As a husband and wife duo, Christina and Marcus have been delighting audiences throughout the pandemic with fortnightly online ‘Concerts from our Living Room’. Now, at last, they are able to bring that same level of rapport and intimacy to the Eastgate Theatre with a programme featuring some favourite pieces from their recorded series.
Centrepiece of the recital will be the second violin sonata by the remarkable 19th century French composer Louise Farrenc. Christina Lawrie says, “Louise Farrenc’s magnificent Sonata no. 2 is a bold, large-scale work with gorgeous melodies, harmonies and virtuosic sweep.” The programme also includes Bach’s famous ‘Air on a G String’, a Chopin Ballade and a Scottish folk set (containing a surprise local connection….). Truly something for everyone.
“Christina Lawrie is a pianist of formidable intellect and boundless technique…Fantastic playing” (The Observer)
“…a profoundly spiritual experience, with sensitive playing from Marcus Barcham Stevens” (Gloucestershire Echo)
Note: this concert will last about one hour and will be played without an interval.
