Tweed Theatre presents Men Should Weep

This extraordinarily moving and uplifting play tells of lives lived in grinding poverty, massive unemployment and overcrowding in the east end of Glasgow in the 1930s but, like Sean O’Casey’s plays about the Dublin poor, it becomes a surprisingly funny celebration of life and courage.

At the centre is Maggie, the mother of seven children ranging from baby to adult, who holds the family together in a grim tenement slum, coping with unemployment, TB, errant children, prying neighbours and a censorious sister.

Playwright Ena Lamont Stewart depicts a world where a slice of bread and jam is a treat, yet somehow the fractious Morrison family survive through a mixture of love and dogged determination.
