In another musical first for #eastgateathome, Sanna Hjortenskog (voice) and Joe Wilton (on low whistle) perform an outdoors, socially distanced duet of a popular song by Carl Michael Bellman – the Swedish equivalent of Robert Burns who, to this day, remains a central figure in the Swedish song tradition. Through his hundreds of tunes, Bellman painted musical stories of the Stockholm city life all around him. Many were happy ones, while others were extremely black.

This clip features a brief introduction to Bellman’s work before Sanna and Joe treat us to a performance of Solen glimmar blank och trind (or The sun is gleaming, shiny and round). Sanna and Joe are both Friends of the Eastgate, while Joe organised monthly folk sessions in the Eastgate café prior to lockdown. Both hope to return very soon.
