Learmont Drysdale – the Man and his Music
Robert England introduces Learmont Drysdale (1866 – 1909), a composer with roots in the Scottish Borders who, in a short life of just 43 years, wrote several works which elicited high praise, notably an orchestral ballade, The Spirit of the Glen (1889), an orchestral prelude, Thomas the Rhymer (1890), and a dramatic scena The Lay of Thora (1891). In 1891 a picturesque overture, Tam o’ Shanter, gained the prize of thirty guineas offered by the Glasgow Society of Musicians for the best concert overture.
His music is performed for the first time in many years. The programme has been devised by pianist Marianna Abrahamyan from research on the original scores lodged in the archives of the University of Glasgow. It will be performed by Music in Peebles Patron, Gina McCormack (violin), and students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Robert England spent his career travelling the world with the United Nations before settling in Tweeddale. Learmont Drysdale is buried in Peebles cemetery and there is a memorial to him on Damhead Rig, just south of Traquair.
