Welcome to Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre Peebles
Take the Time, Take a Chance, Take Part
With a packed programme of live events, screenings and films Peebles Eastgate theatre welcomes audiences of around seven thousand in an average season. But watching and listening are not the only things people can do in the busy venue. More adventurous visitors dance, draw, paint, act, crochet, drum, sing, belly dance, play, write, knit or take part in one of the occasional pop up workshops.
The Eastgate’s participation programme is called engage and offers everyone – from 2 to 92+ – the opportunity to play, learn and create with a range of specialist tutors. Classes are usually grouped into seasons that can be booked as a block or taken as individual sessions. They run on weekdays and weekends, with sessions scheduled to meet the needs of different age groups.
Let’s Pretend (acting) and Ryhthm Kids (percussion) are both for 3 – 5 year olds and take place during the day on Mondays and Thursdays. Art Sparks (arts and crafts) and Scottish Theatre & Music School are both for young people over 7 and run after school on Thursdays. For those with more experience in drama there is a new series of masterclasses for 12 – 18 year olds on Friday afternoons. Fiona Henderson School of Dance and Performing Arts is a resident company providing classes almost every dance style for everyone from beginners to professional level.
During the day adults can choose from a selection of dance classes in jazz, ballet and tap, Sunday crochet with Cast On and, for those over 55, Acting Up with Clare Prenton. Adults with disabilities are welcomed at the Peebles Players Monday morning music sessions with Claire Garnett.
Writers meet every second Wednesday evening to test ideas and share their work. Other evening adult classes concentrate on slightly more exotic dance with Just Jhoom! Bollywood dance on Thursdays and Starlight Egyptian Bellydance on Mondays.
Whether you want to create a masterpiece, learn a new skill or just take time out to play, the Eastgate probably has a class to suit. Find out more at the theatre, by telephoning 01721 725777, online at www.eastgatearts.com or by dropping in on the Open Day on 8 April for a free taster class.
