Music: Claire Hastings Thursday 25 October 7.30pm
Claire Hastings is a folksinger/songwriter and ukulele player performing songs of humour and poignancy, passion and social history “with a voice as fresh and clear as a Scots spring morning” The Living Tradtion
Originally from Dumfries, Claire was named BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2015.
Her debut album Between River and Railway was greeted with huge critical acclaim. “Between River and Railway…an album that touches the soul, and lifts the heart” Neil McFadyen, Folk Radio
Drama: This Evil Thing Saturday 17 November, 7.30pm
“This protest of yours, is it really worth losing your lives over?” January 1916: Bert Brocklesby is a young schoolteacher, and preacher at his local Methodist church; Bertrand Russell is one of the greatest philosophers of his time. With the advent of military conscription their worlds are about to be turned upside down.
This Evil Thing, written and performed by award-winning actor Michael Mears, is the compelling and inspiring story of the men who said no to war.
“A moving and dynamic retelling of a hidden story” The List
Music: Bruce Molsky Wednesday 12 December, 7.30pm
One of the most revered ambassadors for America’s old-time mountain music. For decades, he’s been a globetrotting performer, has recorded seven solo albums, well over a dozen collaborations and had two Grammy-nominations. He’s also the classic “musician’s musician” admired by collaborators like Linda Ronstadt and Mark Knopfler and was dubbed “the Rembrandt of Appalachian fiddlers” by virtuoso violinist Darol Anger.
Molsky seduces audiences with his musical virtuosity and conversational wit – an approach that can make Carnegie Hall feel like a front porch or intimate jam session.
“An incredible power of history and tradition in his vocal“ – Linda Ronstadt
It’s a long time ago now (despite still being winter!)…..Before Christmas, Santa was visited by 70 children. It was a magical event and raised over £200
The theatre also laid on a wonderful Christmas party and we raised £322 from the raffle.
‘Friends Sharing Food’ is a wonderful fundraising idea, with various events taken place. One of the most recent was in Manor Village Hall, where a Soup Lunch was organised by Claire Garnett and friends. It raised over £400 , so well done to Claire, her friends and the musicians too!
So why not invite your friends and neighbours and provide cake and coffee, lunch, buffet, dinner, cheese and wine – you choose what to do! With the invitation explain it’s a fundraiser for Friends of the Eastgate. Ask people for a minimum donation e.g. £4-£5 for cake and coffee, dinner £10 plus. Get guests to bring drink! This is win win as money is raised, a good time is had and your guests may be inspired to hold an event. Please let Christine Bruce know if you are hosting an event. firstname.lastname@example.org
For those of you who receive their invitations to renew their subscriptions, there is a slight change to the form. The membership stands at £25 at the moment and will remain so for the foreseeable future but for those who see themselves as ‘long term’ members and are happy to pay more now, there is the option available to pay for 5 years for only £100. When you complete the form, please tick over the figure you wish to subscribe.
GIFT MEMBERSHIP………. Following on from the Christmas Gift pack idea, we are now introducing this all year round! So if you are stuck what to buy for a friend or family member, why not give them a year’s subscription to the Eastgate? Packs now available from the Box Office
