This is a portrait of a genius, and of a friendship between two men who are utterly different, yet increasingly bonded through an act of creativity. In 1964, the artist Alberto Giacometti (Geoffrey Rush) persuades the American writer James Lord (Armie Hammer) to sit for a portrait. As the days turn into weeks Lord realises his entire life has been hijacked by this erratic genius.
